Announcement of Competition
- The International Academy of Music and Arts "Polaris", Music Sector,
organizes the 4th International Piano Competition "Giuseppe
Terracciano".
- The International Piano Competition "Giuseppe Terracciano" will take
place from 30th of June to 7th of July 2007 in Giffoni Valle Piana (SA) –
Italy, at the Convento di San Francesco and in the neighbouring
centres.
- The Competition is open to the pianists of any nationality.
Categories and Programmes
- The Competition is divided into the following Categories:
Category A: pianists no older than 10 years
Category B: pianists no older than 12 years
Category C: pianists no older than 15 years
Category D: pianists no older than 18 years
Category E: pianists no older than 22 years
Category F: pianists no older than 26 years
Category G: pianists no older than 30 years
Category H: no age limits.
Piano Prize: no age limits.
- The age is estimated by the date 31st May 2007, deadline of the
application for the Competition.
- The programme of the Categories Competition provides for:
Category A: free programme, lasting no more than 5 minutes
Category B: free programme, lasting no more than 10
minutes
Category C: free programme, lasting no more than 15
minutes
Category D: free programme, lasting no more than 20
minutes
Category E: free programme, lasting no more than 25 minutes,
including compositions of 2 different styles at least.
Category F: free programme, lasting no more than 30 minutes,
including compositions of 2 different styles at least.
Category G: free programme, lasting no more than 35 minutes,
including compositions of 2 different styles at least.
Category H: free programme, lasting no more than 40 minutes,
including compositions of 2 different styles at least.
- The programme of the Piano Prize provides for:
- Preliminary round: free programme lasting no more than 30
minutes.
- Final round: free programme lasting no more than 50 minutes,
completely different from the one performed in the preliminary round, and
including compositions of 2 different styles at least, and including one
entire sonata chosen among those of Haydn, Mozart, Clementi and
Beethoven.
- In the final round of the Piano Prize they will enter those who pass
the preliminary round with positive judgement of ability from the
Commission, no more than 8 people.
- The duration of the performances can be exceeded only in the case which
one composition of characterist unity may be presented. However, the
Commission has the right to interrupt the performance or to listen to the
candidates again.
- The candidates can enrol themselves for both the Categories Competition
and for the Piano Prize by sending separate application forms and by
effecting distinct payments of the respective entrance fees. They can enrol
themselves for a higher Category, by effecting the pertinent entrance fees,
and however they can enrol themselves for one Category.
- The performed pieces must be published and in original version.
Transcriptions, reductions, adaptations and arrangements, will be not
accepted (with the exception of the Category A). Moreover, they must be
performed in full.
- The candidates can perform their own compositions only in the
Categories, on condition that they are published (they have to indicate the
edition), and their performances have not to exceed the 30% of the duration
of the Category.
- The performance of the Piano Prize must be played by heart.
Commission
- The Commission is formed by Italian and foreign teachers and
concertists. The members of the Commission who may be teachers of the
candidates, or may have been their teachers in the two previous years, will
have to abstain from voting and any argument about such candidates. In case
he thinks it convenient, the Artistic Director can participate in the
valuations of the candidates, with right to vote.
- The voting of the Commission is expressed in cents, by arithmetic
average of the marks formulated from the single commissioners, with
exclusion of the higher and the lower mark, that however it will be excluded
just once in the case it is often expressed. The voting of the Commission is
unquestionable, inappellable, irrevocable and definitive. The decisions of
the Commission will be recorded and made public.
Application
- The application forms, written on unstamped paper, must be sent to the
address of the Academy, no later than the 31st of May 2007 (the date of the
postmark will attest it). The applications, arrived out of the deadline,
might be accepted in the Artistic Director’s unquestionable
opinion.

- The application fees, to be paid by postal order, are so
subdivided:
Category A: EUR 25
Category B: EUR 30
Category C: EUR 35
Category D: EUR 40
Category E: EUR 45
Category F: EUR 50
Category G: EUR 55
Category H: EUR 60
Piano Prize: EUR 80
- The renunciation of the candidate to participate in the Competition, or
his exclusion from the Competition, does not permit the repayment of the
application fee. The fee is repayable only in case of cancellation of the
Competition.
- The application form must contain: name and surname, place and date of
birth, nationality, mail address, phone number, eventual e-mail address,
Category in which he choose to participate, performed programme, signature
(parent’s, if he’s underage), assent to the data processing, acceptance of
the Regulations and copy of the payment of the respective fee. Incomplete
application forms will not be taken in consideration.
- The candidates have to inquire by telephone about the arrival of the
application form, the dates and the Competition schedule.
Rounds course
- Every candidate must be introduced by a valid personal identity
document and at least with two copies of the performed pieces, in the day
and at the hour of the rounds.
- The candidates will be listen to in alphabetical order, by the eventual
draw of the initial letter. Who will be absent will be excluded from the
Competition, and they could be readmitted only for a justified reason, and
only if the valuation of the Commission has not begun yet. The candidates
must be available all through the Competition.
Appraisals and Prizes
- The scores of the Competition will determine the assignment of the
following prizes:
- 100 cents: First absolute prize
- from 95 to 99 cents: First prize
- from 90 to 94 cents: Second prize
- from 85 to 89 cents: Third prize
- from 80 to 84 cents: Diploma of merit
- until 79 cents: Certificate of participation.
- A merit list, with reference to the prizes will be assigned, will be
established in the Piano Prize.
- The following prizes will be assigned to the winners of the Categories
Competition:
To the First absolute prize:
- Category A: Cup, Diploma and 60 EUR’s worth of prize
- Category B: Cup, Diploma and 80 EUR’s worth of prize
- Category C: Cup, Diploma and 100 EUR’s worth of prize
- Category D: Cup, Diploma and 120 EUR’s worth of prize
- Category E: Cup, Diploma and 150 EUR’s worth of prize
- Category F: Cup, Diploma and 200 EUR’s worth of prize
- Category G: Cup, Diploma and 250 EUR’s worth of prize
- Category H: Cup, Diploma and 300 EUR’s worth of prize
To the First prize of every Category: Cup and Diploma
To the Second prize of every Category: Plaque and Diploma
To the Third prize of every Category: Medal and Diploma
- The following prizes will be assigned to the winners of the Piano
Prize:
To the Fist prize: Cup, Diploma and 2.000 EUR’s worth of prize
To the Second prize: Plaque, Diploma and 1.000 EUR’s worth of prize
To the Third prize: Medal, Diploma and 500 EUR’s worth of prize
- The Commission, by basing itself on the artistic qualities of the
candidates, can assign ex-aequo prizes or can not assign any prize or also
can institute special prizes. For any problem of artistic interpretation,
the judgement of the Chairman of the Commission is worth.
- All the money prizes are subject to withholding taxes, by law. The
winners, in accordance with the Direction, can change the prizes to services
offered by the Academy.
General rules
- The prizes of the winners and the respective Diplomas must be drawn
exclusively in the final evening, otherwise there’s the penalty of loss of
them. The winners of every Category and of the Piano Prize will have to play
during the prize-giving of the winners, that will take place the 7th of July
2007, performing a programme chosen among the pieces produced at the
Competition, and decided in collaboration with the Artistic Director. The
Artistic Director has the right to let others worthy candidates to exhibit
eventually.
- The Academy reserves the right to record, reproduce and diffuse with
every equipment the phases of the Competition and publish the respective
news about the course and results. The rights of every exhibition,
recording, resumption, publication also on the Web, and possible recordings,
wireless or television transmissions, photographic resumptions, both
relating to the Competition phases and to the final evening, does not set up
acclaim to any kind of reward or financial request.
- Travelling expenses and of stay are debited to the candidates entirely.
Moreover, they must provide for required documents necessary for the
admission and stay in Italy.
- The candidates commit themselves to respect and observe the local laws
and regulations. The organization declines any responsibility for eventual
misunderstandings, damages and/or accidents of whatever nature that can come
about persons and things, whether through the course of the Competition or
in the travel and in the stay.
- The under-age candidates must always be followed by a companion of age,
that assumes the responsibility for the surveillance and protects their
safety all through the Competition.
- The President of the Academy, the secretary of the Commission and the
other attending authorities, have right to be present at the works of the
Commission, without right of discussion and mark.
- The candidates, for possible news propagation about their participation
in the Competition, will have to indicate the won Prize correctly. Any abuse
will be prosecuted according to law.

- The application for the Competition involves the explicit integral
acceptance of the present Regulations.
- At any time, the Academy reserves the right to bring modifications to
the present Regulations, for a better course of the Competition. The
President of the Academy is competent to decide any interpretative problem
connected to it. The text in Italian is valid for any kind of
problem.
- The participation in the Competition involves the issue of the consent
in the personal processing data, in observance of the laws in force in point
of privacy’s law. Particularly, the publication of the names of the
participants to the Competition and respective results is
authorized.
- For any eventual controversy the court of Salerno will be
competent.
The International Academy of Music and Arts "Polaris" informs that, in the
same period, High Courses and Masterclass will be activated with Italians
and foreign teachers.
